Behind the Canvas: Why We Still Make Your Supports by Hand

When you walk through the doors of our workshop, two scents instantly blend together: the smell of freshly cut wood and the slow drying of canvas coating. Since 1968 for our stretcher bars, and 1989 for our canvas, this has been our daily life.

Behind the Canvas: Why We Still Make Your Supports by Hand

If you are reading these lines, you are likely a sensitive, discerning painter who knows that a work of art doesn't begin with the first brushstroke, but with the choice of its support. So, we wanted to share a bit about who is hidden behind Master Toiles, and why we choose to do things differently.

A Story of Preserved Crafts (and a Unique Label)

Today, the vast majority of canvases are mass-produced by machines on the other side of the world. We chose another path: one of artisanal resistance. In our workshop, we still work with traditional manufacturing systems, from carpentry to coating.

This commitment is the reason why we are the only canvas manufacturer in France to be awarded the "Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant" (EPV) label (Living Heritage Company). This label is the French State’s recognition of rare and fragile savoir-faire. For us, it is above all a promise we make to you: never to industrialize our craft.

Knowing Where Things Come From: Our Transparency

To respect your work, we must respect our raw materials. We hide nothing; everything is sourced as locally as possible:

  • The Linen: While many linens are grown in Europe, they are often woven elsewhere. Ours is grown in France and woven in France by Maison Pierron. It is a dedicated choice for quality.

  • The Wood: Our carpentry workshop is right next to our coating workshop. We shape our stretchers using PEFC-certified pine from the Landes forest. Here, we use solid wood sections, assembled traditionally without glue, nails, or screws, but through mortise and tenon joints. This ancient system respects the natural movement of both the canvas and the wood. And to push the details even further, even our beech wood stretcher keys are made right here, by hand.

Our Signature: Every single stretcher frame that leaves our workshop is marked by pyrogravure (wood burning). It is the visual proof that an artisan took care of your support from A to Z.

Crafting for the Decades to Come

When we coat a canvas by hand (requiring mainly 4 successive layers), we deeply feel our responsibility. We know this support will receive a visual language, a technique, an emotion. Our goal is for this unique language to endure through the ages and dialogue with future generations. We don't manufacture a disposable consumer product; we design a healthy, robust, and natural support built to last.

7 People at Your Service (Truly at Your Service)

Master Toiles is a small team of 7 French craftsmen and women. This human-sized structure allows us to offer you two things that have become far too rare today:

  • Customization and Experimentation: Need a non-standard format and need it fast? We adapt instantly. Already have a painted canvas that needs a specific support? We can build the custom frame and stretch it for you. Looking to test different materials by mounting them on a stretcher? Come on in, let’s experiment together!

  • A Direct Connection (and the "Best Customer Service in France"): Alright, we gladly claim this unofficial title, but mostly because we haven't figured out how to install a robot or an outsourced call center in the middle of our wood shavings! Jokes aside, with us, you talk directly to the people who actually make the products, cut the wood, and coat the canvas. We love discussing technique, we love talking about painting, and we take the time to do it right.

Every canvas that leaves our workshop takes a piece of our story to join yours. Thank you for allowing us, every day, to keep this beautiful craft alive.
