The Art of Jute: Discover Our New Handcrafted Extra-Wide Canvas

In the privacy of our workshop, where the craftsman's gesture meets the artist's high standards, a new product has been born. We are proud to present our new range of jute canvas, designed for those seeking a living, robust, and noble material.

As a Living Heritage Company (EPV), we perpetuate a legacy of excellence in the manufacture of stretched canvases and painting canvas rolls. Unlike industrial products, every meter of textile that leaves our workshop is the result of rigorous manual labor.

Extraordinary dimensions for your creations

To meet the needs of muralists and large-format painters, we now offer our jute rolls in an exceptional dimension: up to 3.15 m x 10 m. Such a width allows for total creative freedom, seamless, on a support with incomparable stability.

Traditional "sabre" preparation

What sets us apart? Our sizing method. Here, there are no machines, only the traditional technique of manual sizing with a "sabre" (a long blade). This method allows for perfect penetration of the primers while respecting the integrity of the fiber.
We have developed this new canvas in three finishes:

  • White Jute (695g/m²): The pinnacle of preparation. We manually apply two layers of animal skin glue followed by two layers of white coating from the prestigious Master Toiles brand.
Important note: Our canvases are delivered ready-to-paint. You must not apply additional Gesso, as this risks altering the flexibility and the grip of the traditional coating.

  • Natural Jute (655g/m²): For those who love the raw look but seek technical comfort. It receives two layers of skin glue, thus preserving the authentic aesthetic of the fiber while protecting it.

  • Raw Jute: Available without any primer for artists wishing to create their own preparations or use the fiber for specific installations.

FAQ: Everything you need to know about our handcrafted jute canvas

Why choose jute canvas over linen or cotton?

Jute is prized for its pronounced grain and robustness. It is a more "nervous" natural fiber that offers a unique relief to the work. It is ideal for generous impastos and artists looking for a support with character and a raw, organic aesthetic.

What does the "Living Heritage Company" (EPV) label mean?

The EPV label is a mark of recognition from the French State, established to distinguish French firms with excellent artisanal and industrial know-how. By choosing our canvases, you guarantee your works a support manufactured according to ancestral methods (sabre sizing) that the industry has largely abandoned today.

Why shouldn't I add Gesso to your prepared canvases?

Our canvases (White 695g/m² and Natural 655g/m²) are ready to paint. The Master Toiles coating we apply is already optimized for pigment adhesion. Adding industrial Gesso over a traditional animal glue preparation risks creating unnecessary tension on the fiber or making the surface brittle, thereby compromising the longevity of your pictorial layer.

What is manual "sabre" sizing?

It is a traditional technique where the craftsman uses a long blade (the sabre) to spread the skin glue and the coating. Unlike a machine process, the sabre forces the preparation into the heart of the fiber while scraping off the excess. This ensures a flexible canvas that does not "soak up" paint unevenly.

Do you offer custom sizes in addition to rolls?

Yes, in addition to our 3.15 m x 10 m rolls, we can mount this jute canvas on our handcrafted stretchers. Whether for standard formats or monumental custom dimensions, our workshop adapts to your specific needs.

Can I paint directly on raw jute canvas?

Raw canvas (without primer) is very absorbent and acidic. For optimal conservation of your oil or acrylic works, we strongly recommend using our sized versions (Natural or White). However, raw jute is ideal for tapestry work, decoration, or experimental artistic research.
